About TCT

TCT was founded in 1968 by John and Barbara King along with a host of other generous volunteers.   For many years TCT produced several shows a year at Wells Auditorium.  When the Wells campus closed, TCT moved into rented quarters at the Tehachapi Academy of Performing Arts on Valley Blvd, producing up to 10 shows a year in a space noted for its intimacy.

Having outgrown our space at TAPA, TCT set out to find a new home, while producing shows in a variety of locations, from the Stallion Springs Community Center,  to Mama Hillybean’s Coffee House to Jacobsen Middle School.

Striking a deal to partner with the City of Tehachapi in reconstructing the former BeeKay theatre site at 110 S. Green St., TCT embarked on what has been a massive fundraising campaign for a small organization.  While the City of Tehachapi has combined a National Park Service grant and redevelopment funds to recreate the structure of the building, TCT has undertaken to complete the interior, including carpeting, tile, chandeliers, sconces, murals, all stage lighting and sound equipment, chairs, risers, and draperies.  In exchange for a long-term, rent-free lease, TCT will manage the building on the City’s behalf and assume responsibility for all operating, utility, maintenance and insurance costs.

At long last TCT will have a full-time home, and the City of Tehachapi will have a legitimate theatre open for a wide variety of events.

History

History of TCT

Tehachapi Community Theatre was founded in 1968 under the wisdom of John and Barbara King, Zella Young, Alice Preiskorn, Walt and Pam Bray and others that shared a passion for theatre and its place in our community. Presenting its first performance in the Wells School Auditorium, TCT has consistently produced quality productions ranging from drama, comedy, musical, melodrama, and other special engagements. In 2003, TCT moved into its current home located within the Tehachapi Academy of Performing Arts (TAPA). Our new “Studio Theatre” has produced an exciting, new approach to the way we present our productions, allowing for maximum creativity and thought “outside the box.” Over the years, TCT has had many faces on stage, in the director’s chair and behind the scenes, but one thing hasn’t changed, TCT’s commitment to serve the community of Tehachapi with its incredible offerings. As TCT looks forward, its mission is to expand the role of our ever growing community into theatre arts. While politicians continue to limit federal funding for the arts, it is organizations like TCT that reach out to the public and offer a place for a challenging and rewarding experience. TCT is truly a community theatre and it welcomes all new-comers to audition for a role in an upcoming performance, volunteer to help operate the playhouse, learn behind the scenes applications and many other duties. Please browse the pages of this website to find where you fit into our community theatre. TCT welcomes you!!!
